Getting Started

bees flying around beehive entrance

Site your hives

Is there enough space to maintain them? The British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) recommends siting hives in a location with a continuous supply of food and water, shelter from strong winds, and easy access for the beekeeper. Ensure they are not at risk from flooding and that they are not close to a public footpath. Finally consider your neighbours if you are placing your hive in your garden – Which way will the bees fly?

Initial Equipment

  • A suitable hive
  • Protective clothing – a beekeeper suit and disposable ‘Marigold’ type gloves that cover the wrists.
  • A smoker and fuel
  • A hive tool
  • Feeder
  • Bees
